Are you
thinking of moving to or within California but aren’t sure which city is right
for you? In this episode of Hometown USA, I’m going to tell you all about my
hometown of Redding, California, and the surrounding areas in Shasta County. We’ll
look at the pros and cons of living in this beautiful city so you know exactly
what to expect.
Affordable
Living
One of the first
pros that make Redding the most attractive area in California right now is the
affordability factor. We've seen so many prices climbing, from gas and housing to
food and everything in between. It's really important to find someplace that is
affordable, and Redding is one of the last places in California that has
affordable housing.
You can find
homes and price ranges of $300,000 to $400,000, and you can get some with land,
some with pools, and some in excellent neighborhoods. Although inventory is
low, when you find the house that you're looking for it's still much more
affordable than other areas in California.
Outdoor
Recreation
On top of the
affordability factor, another pro of living is here is outdoor recreation.
Redding, California, and the surrounding areas are probably some of the most
beautiful areas in the whole country. We have beautiful Shasta Lake with its
approximately 365 miles of shoreline. There’s also Whiskeytown Lake, the
world-renowned Sundial Bridge, the Sacramento River (that’s excellent for
rafting in the summer or salmon fishing), Mount Lassen, and Mount Shasta.
Additionally,
we are a short drive away from snow skiing in the wintertime. We also have
mountains for hiking and plenty of outdoor activities like dirt bikes,
motorcycles, and areas to go camping with friends and family. It’s an excellent
place to go swimming or bring friends and family for an afternoon barbecue. We
just have the most beautiful surroundings that you could ask for with so many
adventures that people want to enjoy.
While you may
not be getting a big-city environment, the mountain views in Shasta County are
something that you cannot find anywhere else. I traveled the country and was
shocked when I realized that no place was as beautiful as my hometown. It
didn't matter where I went or where I traveled to; the scenery here—from the
river to the mountains to the sunsets—is just absolutely gorgeous. You can't
find it anywhere else. Here in Redding, you can sit down, have a drink, kick
your feet up, watch the sun go down, and see the most beautiful views ever.
A Small-Town
Community
Another pro
to living in Shasta County or Redding is the community. Shasta County is full
of the most helpful, kind, compassionate people that are willing to go above
and beyond to help one another. We have a small-town community feel with people
reaching out to help others.
There are small
groups that help with cleanups, events, or fundraisers to help those in need.
We also have small businesses that I’ll be introducing you to over the next
couple of weeks; they’re very community-oriented and do so much to give back.
These people
and businesses are so appreciated by community members, and it’s something
different that you won't find anywhere else. You can travel the world, but when
you come here, you'll find that the people are very compassionate and giving.
Overall, the community is very welcoming.
The Cons
Of Living In Redding
Now I’ll tell
you a little bit about some of the cons of living in Redding. With every good
place, there are bad things also, and I don't want to beat around the bush when
it comes to the things that maybe aren't the best in Shasta County.
One con is we
are still part of California; there's no way to get around it. But our views
are very different than the rest of California, and we're proud of that. The
other thing is that we've had several fires in Shasta County, so we do have
higher insurance rates in some areas. It does get very warm here during certain
times in the summer, and it's not uncommon to have several days that are over
100 degrees.
That being
said, we have amazing firefighters and first responders. When something does
happen, our community stands together.
